The assembly hall of the castle of El Gran Capitán hosted last Friday the gala awards ceremony with which the Fundación Social Universal (FSU) annually recognizes individuals and institutions that work to improve the quality of life of people and institutions. in the defense of human values, youth, children and the environment.

    The event began with a poetic-musical performance by María Garal, journalist and poet from Montilla, together with Dany Ruz, composer, producer and audiovisual director. Rafael Arenas, a biologist and expert in endangered species management, also participated in the event.

    The FSU has granted the award for the Defense of Human Values. Bomberos Unidos Sin Fronteras (BUSF), an NGO formed by specialized firefighters from Spain and specialized in catastrophes and emergencies due to the impact of natural phenomena with catastrophic effects, sends its immediate response teams to the affected areas for emergency logistics, rescue, salvage, water purification and distribution, medical care and humanitarian aid.

    In the Environmental Defense category, the award was given to Grupo Ornitológico Tumbabuey, a non-profit conservationist organization founded in 2011 that works to protect birds and the habitats they use at some point in their life cycle. Its conservation and environmental education projects are developed mainly in Andalusia with the aim of promoting the protection and conservation of wild birds and their habitats, developing scientific studies related to avifauna and providing advice and training to public and private organizations in environmental conservation.

    The Award for the Defense of Youth and Children will recognize the work of the Asociación de Voluntariado de Ámbito Social (AVAS), a social entity founded in 1995 in Puente Genil with the mission of contributing to the defense of human dignity and the promotion of people at risk of exclusion, through a wide range of actions of socio-educational support, job placement, integration of immigrants, leisure and free time, among others.

    During the event, tribute was also paid to Antonio Álvarez García, founding patron of the FSU, who passed away in September last year.

    A special mention was also made to Marina García Ramírez, a young graduate of the Mamá Margarita Afternoons Home project, “in recognition of her effort, perseverance and capacity for work, setting an example for young people who want to achieve their dreams”, as detailed by this organization that emerged in Montilla in 1993 as a response to the alarming conditions of poverty in many regions of the world.
